Feeling ungrounded is a common feeling these days. Spending too much time on our phones, too much time indoors, and even eating a less than optimal diet can leave us feeling disconnected, uncentered, and simply not ourselves. Our bodies thrive when we’re connected to the Earth, when we see the sunrise and sunsets, and when we feed our body good food and water.
Ungrounded Spiritual Practices
Now I’d also like mention that many spiritual and new age communities love spending time in the “high vibe” places… so for example doing lots of work with the upper Chakras, working with the higher vibrational crystals, working towards channeling and psychic abilities. These are all amazing aspects of the human potential (and believe me, I love working with the high vibe crystals!) But when these areas are not balanced out with the lower energy centers; the ones that connect us to our shadow and force us to dig in deep and do the work to reveal, heal and clear, we’re shutting ourselves off from a major part of our spiritual work, not to mention feeling disconnected and ungrounded. There’s got to be a balance between the two.
Get Outside
So if I could give one piece of advice for getting grounded and centered (whether it be because you spend too much time working in front of the computer, or a lot of time connecting to your crown Chakra), it would be to get outside; get barefoot on the earth, stand tall with the trees and flow with the water. Gaze at the moonlight, watch the sunrise, and forest bathe every day.
Now, understandably this isn’t a possibility for everyone given where you live, what your daily schedule is, among other circumstances. So if you live 10 stories up, or work 60 hours a week, or don’t have access to public parks or nature trails, this is my tried, tested and true ritual to getting yourself grounded.
Get Grounded Ritual
Through cleansing, connecting to our breath, grounding through a couple yoga poses, meditation and even eating the right foods, this ritual will leave you feeling rooted, fueled and ultimately grounded for your day. Anytime you need to get connected from within and to the Earth’s supportive energy, practice this simple ritual.
What You Need:
15 minutes to dedicate to this practice
herbs/incense to smudge with or a beeswax candle
a yoga mat (optional)
a piece of Black Tourmaline, Smokey Quartz or Red Jasper (optional)
cedar wood, pine or spruce essential oil (optional)
Cleanse the Space
Clear any clutter in the space where you are going to perform your ritual- make it neat and tidy as this will help to declutter the energy as well. Cleanse the space by smudging with any herbs or incense of your choice, or lighting beeswax candles does an excellent job too.
Essential Oils
If you’ve chosen to work with essential oils, place a drop on the insides of your wrists or the palms of your hands. Breath it in. Most tree essential oils will help us feel rooted, grounded and supported. But other warming oils like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger etc will help to ground as well.
Breathe
Stand in your space, close your eyes and take 5 rounds of deep, cleansing and grounding breaths. Let your inhales match the length of your exhales. You can even add a little pause between the breaths to come into the present even more. Let the sound of your breath resonate through your body, feel your mind clear, and come into the eternity of the moment.
Yoga Poses
These two yoga poses get us rooted into our legs and lower energy centers. They help to ground and anchor us into the Earth. You don’t need yoga experience to do this. If you’re not familiar with the poses, I’ve added links to give you a visual.
Come to the top of the mat with your hands in prayer at your heart. Pause for a breath.
Step your right food back into Warrior 1. Take 5 rounds of breath here.
Step your right food forward, and come into Tree Pose. Take 5 rounds of breath here imagining roots coming out of your supporting foot and grounding you into the earth.
Repeat both poses on the other side.
Come back into prayer once you’ve finished.
Crystals + Meditate
If you’re working with crystals, grab them now and take a comfortable seat on the floor (or chair). Hold your crystals in your lap, close your eyes and start to connect to your tailbone- or your Root Chakra. You can visualize the colour red here, and start to imagine the energy from your tailbone descending into the earth. With each exhale the energy descends further, anchoring you into the Earth’s core. If you’re 10 stories up, take that root of energy all the way through the building and all the way into the depths of the Earth.
Once you feel rooted, you’re going to visualize the Earth’s energy coming up into you through your Root Chakra with every inhale. Allow this energy to feel like fuel for your cells, giving your body vitality and strength.
Draw your energetic root back up into you, sealing that new found grounded Earth energy within you. Carry your crystal(s) with you throughout the day, receiving their grounding, supportive energy.
Closing
Bring your hands into prayer, give gratitude, and take 5 more rounds of breath. Put out any incense or candles that are still burning.
Root Vegetables
For dinner tonight you’re going to make yourself a meal that includes root vegetables. This can include potatoes of any kind, carrots, beats, turnips, parsnips etc. By eating these veggies you are literally consuming the roots of the Earth and inviting that Earth energy into your body.
